In Israel and 60 countries overseas, donations to UJA Federation of Northern New Jersey’s Annual Campaign provide funding for many activities, programs, and initiatives. The members of UJA NNJ’s Overseas Committee review requests for funding, make site visits to Israel and other countries, and hear presentations from overseas partners in order to make allocation recommendations to the UJA NNJ Board of Trustees. Among the programs supported by UJA NNJ are:
Resettlement (Aliyah) and absorption (K’litah) programs: which enable émigrés from Ethiopia, Yemen, Argentina, France, and the former Soviet Union, to begin new lives in Israel;
Programs for at-risk Youth in Israel: which help reverse a cycle of dependence and assist disadvantaged and at-risk youth to become contributing members of Israeli society;
Hunger relief and basic needs for older adults in the Former Soviet Union: which insure that hot kosher meals and needed medications are received by the nearly 240,000 elderly Jews in the former Soviet Union, who live on meager pensions;
Renewal of Jewish Life in the FSU and Eastern Europe: which train children and young adults abroad to be the future Jewish leaders in their communities by engaging them in Jewish activities as well as enabling their participation in Jewish summer and winter camp programs, Israel experiences, and Leadership Development courses;
Community Centers in Israel: which strengthen their two disadvantaged neighborhoods (Neve Yosef in Haifa and Dora in Netanya) by providing social, cultural, educational, and recreational programs for individuals of all ages.
